The 5th Annual Witsand Kayak Angling Competition was held this year on the 3rd and 4th of March. 51 anglers came together from all over South Africa to take part in this growing event now making this the second biggest kayak angling competition in South Africa, and the biggest in the Western and Easter Cape.
Luck was on our side with both days turning out to perfect weather days. Anglers could make use of the maximum time permitted for fishing. The majority of the 51 participants decided to fish in the river on day one. After reports of awesome fishing on the sea side, with tuna being caught most of the kayaks headed for the beach on Saturday morning. With some careful navigating all the kayaks launched successfully.
The competitors registered 125 fish making this years event one for the record books. Some extraordinary fish from the region was caught and even took the anglers by surprise. Species include, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack, Bonito, Makriel, Grunter, Cob, Elf, Harder and Kolstert.
After two days of fishing all the anglers and their families were treated to a spit Braai hosted by Pili Pili Restaurant. The atmosphere was festive with anglers sharing stories from their days fishing.
